Connect 1/Taglit-Birthright Israel – Summer 2012 for Conservative Movement
USCJ is excited to have the opportunity to reach out to young adults, ages 22-26, for the first time by partnering with The Israel Experience Ltd. to offer a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip in the summer of 2012.
Taglit-Birthright Israel provides the gift of first time, peer group, educational trips to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26. The USCJ Connect-1 trip will specifically crafted to reach our young adults in a Conservative movement framework, highlighting some of the many wonderful resources we have in Israel and how we are at the forefront of religious pluralism in Israel. This is a unique opportunity to reach those young adults who have not yet been to Israel on a peer experience, and specifically, by doing so in a Conservative movement framework.
We are currently collecting names of potential applicants at:
http://uscj.org/YouthYoungAdults/YoungAdultOutreach/TaglitBirthrightIsraelwithUnitedSynagogue.aspx
If you refer somebody, you will be entered in a drawing to win an iPad courtesy of The Israel Experience LTD.
Registration opens on February 14, 2012 for a very limited time. All referrals will receive email registration procedures.
To be eligible for the gift of a trip to Israel from Taglit-Birthright Israel, you must be Jewish and not have been on a peer trip to Israel, so participants on such programs as USY Pilgrimage, Ramah seminar, and most day school trips cannot be considered. You are eligible, however, if you were on such a trip before you were 12 years old, or if you went to Israel with your family or a multi-generational group.

Yesterday’s Mavens, Today’s Foodies: Traditions in Northwest Jewish Kitchens
Launched on November 6th at community-wide celebration. Now available for sale at: http://www.wsjhs.org/cart/home.php?cat=3
Food constitutes a unifying and identifying force. Food simultaneously defines and reflects culture and is a primary factor in tradition’s preservation and continuation. For the Jews of Washington State, cuisine—and particularly the stories that the recipes tell—communicate ancient traditions, Eastern European and Ottoman history, Pacific Northwest acculturation, and the evolution of each successive generation’s values and taste buds. Through Yesterday’s Mavens, Today’s Foodies: Traditions in Northwest Jewish Kitchens, the WSJHS seeks to generate excitement for the unique stories that comprise Washington State Jewish culture and its culinary heirlooms.
$36 plus sales tax. Can be shipped or picked up locally at Island Books (Mercer Island), Mr. J’s Culinary Essentials (Bellevue), Masin’s Furniture (Seattle or Bellevue), Stroum JCC (Mercer Island), Temple B’nai Torah (Bellevue).

Washington State Jewish Veterans’ Register
Are you a uniformed service veteran? Are you serving now? Did a loved one or a friend serve in one of our country’s Armed or Uniformed services as an Active or Reserve member?
The Washington State Jewish Historical Society wants to recognize the service of all our veterans – whenever and wherever they served. Many veterans served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Air Force. Some served in the Uniformed Services, such as the Coast Guard or the Public Health Service. In the Selective Service era, some veterans were drafted, where they spent two years on active duty, or chose to enlist in the Reserves or National Guard for six years or more.
As the custodian of Washington State Jewish history, the WSJHS wants to identify and record our veterans’ names and other service information in a Washington State Jewish Veterans’ Register, an enduring record of Washington State Veterans’ military experiences that will be a continuing project.
To receive a registration form that will register your service, a loved one’s, or friends, or for further information, please contact Dave Stone, email dnstone@erols.com, via postal mail at 2323 West Plymouth Street, Seattle, WA 98199-4120 or telephone (206) 284-3996.

2012 National Day of Unplugging
Sundown, March 23-sundown, March 24
Do you have multiple cell phones? Do you find it hard to get through a conversation without posting an update to Facebook? Do you take your laptop to the beach on vacation? Does your partner want to throw your BlackBerry out the window?
We increasingly miss out on the important moments of our lives as we pass the hours with our noses buried in our iPhones and BlackBerry’s, chronicling our every move through Facebook and Twitter and shielding ourselves from the outside world with the bubble of “silence” that our ear phones create.
If you recognize that in yourself – or in the loved ones around you — join us in taking the Unplug Challenge and start living a different life: connect with the people physically around you, have an uninterrupted glass of wine, or read a book to your child.
We have teamed up with Causes.com to create an Unplugging Pledge that asks people to take a tech detox for the 2012 National Day of Unplugging, sundown March 23-sundown March 24. Take the pledge at http://www.causes.com/unplug and then easily share it with friends and family through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail.
Highlighted every year in March by the National Day of Unplugging, the Sabbath Manifesto is designed to help hyper-connected people of all backgrounds to embrace the ancient ritual of a day of rest.
Click here to read what happened when Time Magazine columnist Joel Stein, Mediaite Editor Rachel Sklar, Actor Josh Radnor and others unplugged.
Learn more about the Ten Principles here: http://www.sabbathmanifesto.org/
In 2010 and 2011, people all over the world took the unplug challenge and put down their cell phones, signed out of email, stopped their Facebook and Twitter updates for the National Day of Unplugging.
You can continue unplugging weekly, daily, monthly. It’s your Sabbath Manifesto.
