Hey All! Due to COVID, we've decided to pivot to a virtual event- a family cooking class for Tu Bisvhat!  I love to cook, so I am so glad there is a way we can still cook together- just via Zoom! We will be making a delicious Tu Bishvat inspired pearl barley with figs, apples, and pomegranate seeds and a sweet and creamy butternut squash soup to go with.  Here are the ingredients/supplies you will want to purchase in advance so that you can cook along with us!

  • 1 1/2 cups pearl barley
  • 1 green apple such as Granny Smith
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 1 butternut squash (I recommend getting the equivalent in precut and/or frozen cubbed squash)
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2 cups/1 package dried figs
  • 1/2 cups pine nuts
  • flat-leaf parsley
  • 2 shallot
  • 2 lemons
  • 32oz vegetable broth
  • honey or maple syrup, olive oil, salt, pepper, nutmeg,
  • saucepan (to cook the barley)
  • soup pot to cook the soup
  • knife and cutting board (for grown ups and older kids)
  • baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • oven preheated to 425 degrees
  • blender or immersion blender (optional, helpful if you want a very smooth soup)

*please note that this event will be in place of the Shabbat dinner matches we hoped to have in January.

See you in the kitchen!
