BETH SHALOM CIVIL RIGHTS JOURNEY

APRIL 19 - 23, 2026

Civil Rights Journey posterJoin Rabbi Borodin to learn about the history of civil rights and the ongoing struggle for racial justice in our country as part of this extraordinary opportunity with the nonprofit Etgar 36.  The trip will begin and end in Atlanta, Georgia, with stops in Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery, Alabama.

We will visit the Center for Civil & Human Rights, the 16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park, walk across the Edmond Pettus Bridge, and meet with people who were and still are part of the civil rights struggle.  We will also visit the Rosa Parks Museum, the Equal Justice Initiative’s Museum and Memorial to Peace & Justice, and will spend time with Temple Beth El in Birmingham, Alabama.

The trip will begin on Sunday evening with a group dinner in Atlanta. The tour with Etgar 36 will start Monday and will conclude Wednesday evening. Each day will include tefillah and reflection time with Rabbi Borodin and opportunities to connect with the local Jewish community. All group meals will be kosher or vegan, with vegetarian or vegan options available for individual meals as well.

For over 30 years, the nonprofit Etgar 36 has been engaging with Jewish Americans through their Civil Rights Journey program.  During the Civil Rights Journey, participants will meet people who were at the center of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s and will listen to their stories, with the goal of learning from their experiences and inspiring engagement with efforts to create change today.

If you have questions about the trip, please contact Beth Shalom Executive Director Alexis Kort at alexiskort@bethshalomseattle.org.

*Please note that this trip is geared towards adults, and participants need to be 16 years or older.*
