Outdoor Tu BiShvat Celebration and Tree Pruning for Shmita
Sunday, January 23, 2022 • 21 Shevat 5782
2:00 PM - 4:00 PMDr. Jose Rizal ParkJoin Congregation Beth Shalom and City Fruit to celebrate Tu BiShvat outdoors at a community orchard at Dr. Jose Rizal Park. We'll engage in a Shmita year ritual honoring seasonal produce, followed by volunteering together to do tree pruning. This is a great opportunity to learn how to take care of our urban fruit trees. Urban agriculture offers food that is accessible, low-cost or free, and has a low or negative carbon footprint.
To contribute to the Shmita ritual, feel free to bring produce for donation that is in season in Washington in January: chard, kale, carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, winter squash, potatoes, sunchokes, beets, brussel sprouts, leeks, onions, parsnips, turnips. This is a Shmita and social justice ritual, as we will be donating the produce to North Helpline food bank.
Pruning activity recommended for participants 13 years and older (with adult supervision for youth under 18). Questions about the tree pruning? Check out this volunteer orientation video from City Fruit or contact their staff member Tiare.
