Food & Friends 5786

An annual CBS program with over 100 participants, Food and Friends consists of five monthly potluck meetings. Most groups meet for dinner, some meet for brunch, or some choose to meet for a mix of brunch and dinner times. Meetings are hosted in a rotating fashion at participants’ homes. Participants study using provided texts, as a foundation for conversation while sharing a meal. Groups are formed with a goal of individuals and families getting to know other congregants better and building bonds across neighborhoods within our CBS community.  Since getting to know other Beth Shalom members is an important part of the program, participation is limited to Beth Shalom members (with the exception of the young adult  group).

This year’s curriculum topic: A Journey into Mussar
In a moment when many feel overwhelmed by the brokenness and suffering in our world, this year we will be turning our attention to our one true locus of control: ourselves.  On its surface, this choice may seem counterintuitive, but as Alan Morinis writes, Mussar means “working on yourself, but not for the sake of your self.  By refining and elevating your inner life and nourishing the soul, you clarify your inner light and thus become a lamp shedding light into the world.”  Together, we will explore traditional and modern Mussar texts, using them to work on traits like humility, gratitude, generosity, patience, zeal, and more.

How it works:

You’ll let us know if you’re interested, and we’ll match you with others to form a group that meets 5 times during the year for a vegetarian potluck meal. We will provide the curriculum for you to study in your groups.

  • Each group consists of about 10 people

  • This year’s dates are: November 9, December 7, January 11, February 1, March 8

  • Participation costs $18 per household*

  • The deadline to register is October 17

Based on feedback from the past few years, we’re including a Friday night dinner as an option as well, so you will have a choice about being placed in a group that meets for Shabbat dinner, Sunday brunch, or Sunday dinner.  Groups that meet on Fridays will meet on the Friday before the dates listed above.

If you have any questions, please contact Karin Madwed. We cannot make any promises, but will do our best to accommodate your requests.

*Don’t let your concerns about hosting or fee stop you from signing up. Contact Yana Teush or list any special needs on the sign-up form.
