Rosh HaShanah Learning, Tuesday, 9/23, at 12:15-1:15 in the CBS Beit Midrash:

“The Textual Origins of Rosh HaShanah" with David Zimand

The Torah references the holiday we now call Rosh HaShanah, but never actually uses that name. So what does it call it? And how did we come to call it Rosh HaShanah?

In this session, we will explore references to the holiday in the Torah, elsewhere in the TaNaKh, and in Rabbinic sources, piecing together the textual and historical origins of the holiday as we know it today.

About the Speaker: David Zimand is entering his fifth year as Head of School at Seattle Jewish Community School. A day school graduate himself—as well as the son, brother, uncle, and father of day school graduates—David spent 20 years teaching U.S. History in non-Jewish schools before moving into Jewish educational leadership. He has served as an administrator in Jewish day schools for the past 18 years and is thrilled to be a member of both the Seattle Jewish community and Congregation Beth Shalom.

All services in the CBS Sanctuary will be streamed via our website. Bring your High Holiday ticket for admission.

Note about parking: The CBS lots are reserved for elderly, disabled, or pregnant congregants. The UUC has generously allowed us to use their parking lot for services. If possible, we encourage you to walk, bike, carpool, or bus to services.

Following in the Footsteps of the Prophet Isaiah: Reverend Jan Bolerjack,

Reverend Jan Bolerjack, Pastor of Riverton Park United Methodist Church in Tukwila, will speak about her congregation’s extraordinary work supporting asylum-seekers. Under her leadership, the church has become a vital refuge for hundreds of refugees, offering shelter, food, and care to those arriving in Washington with nowhere else to go.

About: Reverend Jan Bolerjack, Pastor of Riverton Park United Methodist Church in Tukwila, is an admirer of the diversity of people, their thoughts, abilities, challenges, hopes, and disappointments. She is driven by curiosity and wonder and can often be found people-watching at the beach, mall, or local restaurants. She thrives on theological discussions and is known to have strong opinions about how creation and all of humanity ought to be cared for.

When not caring for the migrants who call her church home, she can be found at several sports venues. Go Storm, Go Reign, Go Seawolves!

JFS High Holy Days Food Drive Collection: Starts Monday, September 8 and culminates with annual Food Sort on Sunday, October 5.

Please drop-off your food donation in the CBS lobby.

Once again, Congregation Beth Shalom is participating in the High Holy Days JFS Community-Wide Food Drive. The kindness and generosity of CBS congregants in years past has been overwhelming.

 Donate to our Little Pantry:

The Little Free Pantry is located in front of the CBS Annex. Those in need are encouraged to come by and take what they can use.  Donations accepted anytime - bring your unopened, non-perishable donations to the green bookshelf in the lobby and help us keep our pantry stocked for the community. Since our pantry is on a major road, items tend to go fast! (Note that we cannot accept expired food, even if it's "still good" past the expiration date).
