Text Study of Bilaam: Loyal Prophet or Idolatrous Businessman with R. Rob Toren - Close reading of the Bilaam (aka Balaam) from Parshat Balak (Number 20 ff), a unique narrative in Tanakh in presenting a non-Israelite nation and prophet, their understanding of G-d and their perceptions of Israel. Including Bilaam’s four prophetic poems, unique as well, in both content, form and language. We will examine the narrative’s role in Sefer Bemidbar, how Bilaam is presented elsewhere in Tanakh. We will conclude with rabbinic sources’ view of Bilaam, loyal prophet of God or idolatrous businessman out to make a profit as “prophet for hire.” Students should have some experience or comfort with “close readings” of Biblical texts. No Hebrew knowledge required.
