Mitzvah Corps Updates 2024: Message from our Chairs

Our New and Improved Mitzvah Corps By Patti Kieval and Linda Berg

The Beth Shalom Mitzvah Corps is a deeply felt and essential part of our shul community. Its mission is to provide support for members of the Beth Shalom community during times of need. We are inspired by the Jewish values of gemilut chasadim (acts of lovingkindness), bikur cholim (visiting the sick), and nichum aveilim (comforting mourners).

With this in mind, all Beth Shalom members are part of our Mitzvah Corps, supporting each other, usually with food, but not always.  We do not expect every member to be able to help every time – but we hope that most members can help occasionally.

We have organized the membership by neighborhoods and zip codes so when a need arises in a particular neighborhood, members in that area will receive an email asking if they can help.  If you are able to help, the letter will have directions on how to sign up.  If you’re not able to help with that specific request, just don’t sign up, and hopefully you’ll be able to help at another time. This new neighborhood system will make it easier and more convenient for members to care for one another when they don’t have to travel too far from home.

However, for your own reasons, you may not want to or be able to participate in the Mitzvah Corps at all.  In that case, go to the bottom of the email where you’ll find a link that will allow you to opt-out of the Mitzvah Corps entirely. The link will take you to the email of Yana, Beth Shalom’s program manager. You will then no longer receive Mitzvah Corps requests for help.
